I chose Kandinsky twice for this assignment. He is considered to be the first in creation of abstract art. His use of line, color and shape had spiritual significance to him and was often influenced by music. Strong diagonals and color through out the image give a dynamic sense of movement. Most of the 'straight' horizontal and vertical lines are not really straight, given a slight diagonal tilt. Everything is pointing inward. The shading in the background has a diagonal definition to the shape. |
horizontal or verical

Here Kandinsky has combined vertical and horizontal with curved lines. The only diagonals are in the upper right corner, and they are a strong element because of this. The horizontal and vertical lines are used primarily as background to the curved, except for on the left where horizontal and vertical are prominent through use of dark color. Shading gives depth to the flatness of the straight lines. The curving and diagonal lines provide a sense of movement, the blue rectangle made dynamic through the use of color. |
